Lyov nodded solemnly, laying William on a medbay cot. “Thank you Doktor… hope am not causing trouble. William just… get sick. Panicked… didn’t know what to do. Am…worried..” Lyov sat on a nearby stool, looking between William and the floor.
Ritter moved over and pressed a hand to the medic’s forehead, “How are da little v-ones?” He said, “He burning up..” He listed to the man’s chest, “Congestion…I vould say a bad flu..maybe Pneumonia..”
He moved away still exprecting the heavy to start talking..a mask placed William’s face and the O2 started.
“Twins are alright. Doing very well. Growing much stronger.” He smiled slightly, feeling relief that Ritter knew what to do and that William was probably going to be okay. “Isaak is still small next to Katya, but getting bigger too. Still very shy. Katya is chewing on everything. Loves people. All very well though.” Lyov smiled at the man, grateful for his help. “Much thanks. Was…very worried. William will be alright, yes?”
“He should be fine..da man should take better care of himself..being a mother.” Ritter started about fixing up an IV for the other medic. The needed medications working down the pipe and into his veins.
“Da… William forget about self often.. Try to get him to think more about own health, but always thinks he’s fine…..” Lyov sighed and shook his head, looking towards his fiance. “Is good to know will be okay though.”
William shifted slightly, coughing before opening his eyes. He blinked at the two of them, then realizing what happened. Usually he would have said something, but this time he just lay there, looking a little ashamed that he’d let his health go to the point that Lyov had needed to bring him to Ritter.
"Your family wasn't zhe only family wounded by zhe war, Herr William." He sighed. "It's one of zhe reasons I refuse to have any children before I'm out of zhis place. I can't put zhem zhrough zhe uncertainty I grew up with." He suddenly smiled. "Enough of zhese maudlin subjects. Have zhe children been developing normally?"
“From vhat ve can tell..Ja.. Isaak is a rather small compared to Katya..but.. It ist nicht much of a surprise considering Katya seems to take after Lyov and Isaak after myself..” He grinned down at his little boy. “He is so shy.. Alvays tries to hide.. Vhile Katya vants to meet everyone.” He looked up at the girl in Max’s arms. “She’s going to start sucking on zhat finger in a moment if you aren’t careful Herr. She’s just starting to teeth too.”
"I have no idea what Emmerich's up to. Mostly being pregnant and weird is my guess. He popped in trying to be all nice and friendly, but it was mostly creepy. He seemed almost puzzled about not having friends. Like being nice one time was supposed to negate his being a completely unlikable jerk every other time I've seen him." He shook his head and sighed. "Are you zhe only normal person in your family?"
“He’s pregnant?… Okay zhen.. Ja.. I guess so… even zhen, I’m not zhat normal.. But, more so zhen Emmerich, zhat’s for sure..” He sighed. “Ve all vent through WWII… zhat can change people quvite a bit.” The medic shuddered. “It vas a scarring time for all of us..”
He bit his lip. “Hanna und I watched a soldier shoot out fazher through zhe head. Emmerich was forced into doing government experiments. I zhink it drove him mad after he’d been slowly slipping in zhe years passed..” William shook his head. “We’re lucky to be alive. All three of us..”
"I'll tell you zhis: if she puts caterpillars in my bed again, you'll be getting her back sooner zhan you zhink. I'm going to put her in a crate and send her to you Express Mail. For good measure, I zhink I'll pad zhe box with angry hares so she'll arrive safely. Wouldn't want her to be hurt at all...." His expression darkened. He had not been amused by the caterpillars at all. A few of them had even been mildly poisonous. He only hoped she hadn't been aware of that beforehand.
William frowned. “Zhat’s odd… She loves caterpillars. She used to raise zhem…” The medic shook his head. “From zhe sound of it, zhe sooner I get back to base, zhe happier everyone vill be. He looked back down at his child, sighing. He didn’t want to leave his children just yet…
“It almost pains me to ask… but.. vhat has Emmerich been up to?”
Max found a seat and set Katya on his knee. "Ugh, Nero. He's a new doctor on Fastlane, RED side. He's a competent doctor from what I've heard, but his personality is absolutely repugnant. I would enjoy washing his face with a power sander one of zhese days."
“Oh dear… Hanna has always been drawn to those types.. She’s usually very sveet ozawise… I’m sorry if she’s been any trouble…” William sighed. “I vill bring her back here once I start back at vork again. She doesn’t need to be exposed to people like zhat und someone vill need to vatch zhe tvins once Lyov und I are on zhe field again.” He finally dislodged Isaak from his shirt, cradling his son carefully. The boy was still a good deal smaller than his sister, but he and Lyov couldn’t decide if it was because he was actually small or if Katya had just inherited most of Lyov’s genes.
"If by 'seen' you mean want to run over with a truck, zhen, ja, I've seen her." One corner of his mouth raised in a slight snarl. "She's been hanging around with Dr. Nero and putting caterpillars in my bed. I zhink she's almost as bad as your brother in some ways."
William rolled his eyes and sighed. “She can be… Depends who she’s around. Who is zhis Doktor Nero?” William sat down on the couch so he could get Isaak in a better position. The boy seemed to want to try to burrow under his shirt.
"Well, you have plenty of time with your children and Lyov. Zhat's a plus." He smiled and made faces at the babies. "Will you be coming back to the base when zhe children are bigger?"
“Ve might. It depends really… Our leave is almost up zhough, so you vill be seeing us on base, just nicht living zhere.” He paused for a moment, thinking. “Say…Herr. Have you seen Hanna? She vent to zhe base a couple veeks ago and has yet to contact us..”
"I have no idea. I usually am with Fritz, Ritter, Jasha, and Josie, or else I keep to myself. Zhey're all alive as far as I know..." He shrugged and nuzzled Katya's little nose. "How are you adjusting to living off base?"
“It’s… been a little difficult. Ja, it’s quiet here, but I actually miss all zhe drama a little. I’ve missed mein freunds too.” William shifted Isaak a little in his arms, the little boy holding onto his shirt, his face buried into his chest. “It vas nice of you to visit. Breaks up some of zhe monotony around here.”
He smiled and tried to wiggle his finger free. When that failed, he put his helmet back on and picked up Katya, tickling her chin with his trapped finger. "You're getting bigger, young lady. Are you taking good care of your papas?"
“She is zhe one to make zhe most noise at night. She can’t stand to be avay from us for very long, even zhough zhe crib is in our room.” William chuckled. “Zhey are hard vork, I never expected it not to be, but zhey make us very happy und proud parents…” The medic smiled softly at his daughter before picking up his son.
“So. How are zhings at zhe base? How is everybody?”
The Soldier took off his helmet and peeked into the playpen. Remembering his goddaughter's iron grip, he gently stroked her hand with a finger. "Hallo, little ones. How are you? Remember your Onkel Maxwell?"
Katya gripped his finger in an instant, gurgling at the man happily. Isaak blinked at the soldier from beside his sister, clutching an already well loved stuffed rabbit. The little boy hiccuped once, but was otherwise quiet, seeming to hide behind his toy.
Th medic came back in. “She still has zhe grip of a monkey, and it’s nicht getting any better.” He chuckled. “She loves being around people and vants to hold on to zhem as much as she can.”
